Get help with finding a job or acquiring new employment skills in Mississippi. Several government and privately funded programs operate across the state. Most of the resources are offered at WIN Job Centers. A wide variety of assistance programs are administered, including services for the unemployed, seniors, veterans, and any resident of Mississippi who is looking to improve their employment situation.
Services are available for job seekers. The centers provide clients with easy access to many resources and all of this is offered in one convenient location. Specialists and counselors from the WIN centers can work with customers and help them update or create resumes, perform job searches, and practice/prepare for job interviews. Information is disbursed and it will help people become more competitive in the local and national job market. Among many other resources, people who stop by the centers can use fax machines, copiers and internet computers in order to help with conducting job searches.
Additional examples of assistance available at the WIN Job Centers is as follows. Individuals will be able to participate in many programs that are funded by the government Workforce Investment Act. The three main levels are core, intensive, and training. The basic core services are available to everyone in Mississippi and must be utilized in order to progress to the next level. Counselors can provide some or all of the following.
- Use of internet to perform job searches and post a resume.
- Free job search and placement assistance, if qualified.
- Clients can access office equipment such as copiers, computers, and fax machines.
- Specialized information is offered for unemployment insurance benefits, laid-off workers, veterans, and seniors.
- Receive free details on and referral to child care programs in Mississippi, transportation and other support services. This includes referral to training and educational resources.
Mississippi fully participates in the Workforce Investment Act. As indicated above, there are several parts of this program. They include Title I of WIA, which authorizes a number of services which include training activities for dislocated workers, adults, veterans, and youth. More information is below.
Adult services are offered to those who are at least age 18 or older, eligible non-citizen, or a United States citizen.
Fired or dislocated workers are defined as people that have been laid off from a long-term job. They also need to have very little hope of returning to either that employer or to the industry. The program is fairly inclusive as well. For example, the dislocated client could have been say an unpaid caregiver to the family and dependent upon someone else's income. Dislocated workers in Mississippi can also be defined as self-employed workers who have local economic downturns or faced natural disasters that caused them to lose their job.
The other focus is on youth under the age of 21. WIA pays for youth services, and these are offered for both in-school and out-of-school students. The state will prepare lower income youth and teenagers for postsecondary educational opportunities and for eventual employment.
These various Workforce Investment Act programs are available at the WIN job centers in Mississippi. Staff also partner with other agencies such as local community colleges, the Department of Employment Security, Department of Rehabilitation Services, and various other government and private partners.
Core services that are part of WIA include activities such as assessment, outreach, intake and eligibility determination. - Adult education and literacy workshops or seminars.
- Skill upgrading.
Much of this is provided from Individual Training Accounts (ITAs) at qualified schools, institutions, and centers. The ITA program can supplement financial aid already available through other sources. For some qualified clients the ITA may pay for the entire cost of their training. People will also be empowered through the free guidance, advice, guidance, and support available through counselors at their WIN Job Center. Many of these Mississippi resources also benefit employers as it will help ensure their workforce and applicants are well trained.
Workforce Job Training and Ongoing Support Services are available at WIN Job Centers. Many of the state’s community and junior colleges also partner with the centers. What is offered at most locations is noted below, however the exact services can vary by office.
Job Referral, Placement, and Recruitment can help businesses in recruiting potential workers. This also of course benefits job seekers. Job fairs, on-line recruiting, and online searches are all used.
Clients can look into Pre-Employment Training. It will match candidates with available jobs in Mississippi. Applicants need to complete a specific training curriculum developed by the college training professionals as well as the business. Courses may include technical skill requirements, work ethics, appropriate dress, expectations and more.
Applicant/Employee Assessment can provide an employer with a confidential evaluation of an applicant’s work-related and/or academic skills. Community colleges and WIN centers often use this. Work skills offered and tested can include numerical, verbal and spatial aptitudes, nonverbal reasoning and more. Candidates can look into the Mississippi Career Readiness Certificate (CRC), which is a credential based upon the state’s WorkKeys assessments.
Customized Training is offered at many colleges and WIN centers in Mississippi. This was created to help job seekers meet a specific business need. Courses can include curriculum and material development as well as instruction. Funding is available through government grants, Community Colleges for Workforce Enhancement Training Fund, and other sources.
Many Local Workforce Areas & WIN Job Centers work with the state in designing and coordinating federally funded training activities, including on the job training as indicated below. The On-the-Job Training program helps businesses and employers find workers by reimbursing to them a portion of their expenses incurred during the initial training process. While funding will vary year to year, in some cases the local business may be reimbursed up to one-half the cost of training eligible workers. The program can last up to 6 months as well. Other components include customized training which assists companies with the costs of providing education and skills upgrading for current employees.
SELECT, or Student Education, Leadership, Employment, Citizenship Training Program, is a year round service that is available for in school youth. Applicants need to be between the ages of 16 and 21. It coordinates academic and life skills classes along with other work experience activities.
Some of these work readiness skills include becoming knowledgeable of labor market information, creating an employment portfolio, free job search assistance, and advice on career decision-making. Participants of SELECT will also learn how to complete financial aid and college applications, and ACT applications.
Community service projects are also available. Examples include quarterly guest speakers from health departments, local businesses, extension service offices and field trips to higher education institutions. Tutors are available in Mississippi for participants having academic difficulties. Counseling is offered for those in need, and mentors are available for everyone in SELECT.
The summer employment program is also offered for youth and teenagers. It can connect them through multiple pathways to education and job training that will enable them to both enter and then advance in the workforce. They can get support in accessing the services they need to pursue education and employment goals. Many community colleges, businesses, other education providers, registered apprenticeship, employers, and civic groups help the youth in Mississippi. The program will provide as many youth as possible with summer employment opportunities, including part time jobs.
