Employment assistance available to individuals in Minnesota includes free career counseling, training, job skills and placement services. Government sponsored programs and WorkForce centers are committed to helping the unemployed find a new position. Resources are also offered for individuals who are seeking to further their career and programs can provide on the job training, work experience, and more.
The Minnesota Dislocated Worker Program can help residents overcome barriers and also get back to work as quickly as possible. As soon as you have been notified of termination, contact your local WorkForce Center. The services focus on those individuals with challenges or barriers, and some examples can include the following.
If you were employed in a market that is facing decreases in demand for certain skills then you may be qualified. Other candidates include those that are having difficulty transferring specialized skills to other occupations or industries, those that need formal education or training, or if you are faced with a lack of jobs with earnings at a level comparable to your previous positions.
Assistance programs for dislocated and unemployed workers are custom tailored to meet an individual’s specific needs. Clients can work one-on-one with a career counselor and together you will develop a plan for new employment. This can include career planning, counseling and placement services with Minnesota employers.
Assistance is available for disabled workers. If it is hard for you to get and keep a job, then you may be able to qualify for counseling, job placement, training, and more. Specialized equipment may be provided to you as well. Other services may include counseling to help you set and achieve goals, technology to help you do your job. Maybe even financial assistance is paid out to the disabled under very limited circumstances.
Military Veterans can receive assistance from specialized staff. The state has created a menu of employment services to help all military personnel and veterans, including those in the Reserves and National Guard. Resources can help them prepare for, find, and keep a job, no matter their era of service. Priority is always given to former military members.
These specialists at the WorkForce Centers work closely with employers and businesses to advocate on veterans behalf and also develop job opportunities. The state of Minnesota and nationally recognized Transition Assistance Program and the associated workshops help users make informed choices about education and employment. This is available for veterans and it can help make their transition back into a work and home life smoother, more productive, and more predictable. TAP can help clients take stock of their current situation, set goals, explore career options, make achievable plans and develop skills for the civilian market.
Some of what is offered includes workshops on how to assess individual skills and talents, writing effective resumes and cover letters, conduct successful job searches, licensing and certification requirements, and access proper interviewing techniques.
Resource labs can provide computer and internet access, among other tools. A wide variety of computer software is available for clients, including programs to help with effective Internet job searches, career planning, computer and software skills development and more. Free email accounts and Internet access is offered.
Some of the computer programs and tools include the following. Software is used to identify and sort Web sites to use for a job search or career planning. Clients can use the MinnesotaWorks.net database. Other software includes typing tests, Word-Processing and Resume Tools, typing tutorials and software to help people develop keyboarding skills. Or use word processing software for writing resumes, cover letters and other job-search documents.
The programs at WorkForce Centers offer Career Exploration Tools. Examples include the Minnesota Career information System, which helps customers explore their interests and personality. Career research tools help people learn about occupations and understand the education and training levels needed to work in selected fields. Other tools and data bases provide free information about occupations, salaries, job market predictions, high demand careers and economic trends in your local town and county.

Receive support on understanding the fundamentals of a successful job search. Training for how to write effective resumes and cover letters. Job Search Workshops and Fairs are held from time to time at nearby sites. This will help participants identify their work skills and strengths, build confidence and receive peer support. Learn how to develop the skills to successfully find, win and keep a new job. Also you will be able to participate in activities and share leads. Learn how to market yourself, job seeking and interviewing techniques to compete for the job, understand workplace expectations, coping with unemployment, money management classes and much more.
Adults programs are available for those receiving public assistance or who fall within income guidelines. The Minnesota Office of Job Training can help people determine how to increase and market their skills to earn a higher wage. Work closely with a career counselor to make the most effective career decisions. This is done through a process of assessing your interests and abilities and also in identifying the skills you currently have. Some people may be signed up into education or additional training.
Support services are also available for low income adults and people who are determined eligible. The state can help qualified unemployed and the poor pay for child care, provide emergency vehicle repair, clothing for interviews or a new job, mileage reimbursement for the job search, or emergency financial assistance for basic needs and even funds for miscellaneous healthcare costs.
On The Job Training is a fairly unique program that was created to entice prospective employers in Minnesota to hire you over someone with more experience. It will reimburse a new employer for up to half your wages during a specified training period. The reimbursement provided to the company is meant to offset the cost of spending a little more time and expense on training you versus someone who already has the required skills. The Minnesota On the Job Training program is available for full-time, permanent positions.
Work Experience provides adults job seekers candidates with direct, workplace-based learning and experience. It will help people develop skills, including the ability to work productively with others, manage resources, acquire and use information, develop sound work habits and behaviors, and gain knowledge of business systems. The Work Experience can clients prepare for their next job or to provide you a stepping stone to a specific career.
Career Assessments of Interests, Abilities, and Skills is undertaken at Workforce centers. Staff will help determine what long term career you are best suited for. Once that is done, they can help you enroll into those training programs that relate to your personal strengths, skills, abilities, and those interests.
Personalized Job Search Assistance will help people learn what marketable skills they can offer employers and will offer insight on the way your skills are perceived. Learn how to increase your job search effectiveness and also transfer your skills to other occupations.
This assistance is administered by Career Counselors. They have access to information on education and job training programs and can teach you how to both effectively locate and apply for work. A counselor will more than likely work one-on-one with you, help you develop job seeking skills, prepare a resume, and even conduct practice interviews with you. The Minnesota Office of Job Training may have funds to pay for transportation costs to get to an interview.
Student and Youth Programs are offered by the Office of Job Training. The first part is career guidance. This will help young people figure out their career and how they want to spend their working years. This can help you identify your abilities and true interest, and maybe what career suits you best.
Youth can also receive Work Experience from the Office of Job Training. There are several summer and year-round employment programs for people under the age of 21. Summer jobs can provide a student with experience and a paycheck. They may also receive training in a variety of occupations at non-profit, community-oriented sites. A focus is on teen parents, homelessness, youth facing runaway situations, juvenile offenses, disabilities, economic hardships, chemical dependency, or those with a English language deficiency. The programs will help people complete high school, transition to work, or move on to post-secondary education.
