California free job training programs.
Employment assistance and job training is offered in California from a number of places, including WorkSource Centers. Programs listed below are available for the currently unemployed, seniors, youth, veterans, and anyone who is looking to gain experience or new skills. There are also free job training and placement programs for immigrants, Spanish speakers, and the Asian population in California. Many of the services that may be near you are provided at no cost to individuals.
The main objective of the assistance offered at the WorkSource Centers is to help members of the community in both attaining and retaining a job or new skills. This will lead to an overall increase in self-sufficiency. Newly employed individuals and incumbent workers are not excluded from this goal and anyone from the community can use the free services.
These locations are maybe the leading place to turn to for help. The sites provide clients access to several state-of-the-art, self-directed employment services and resource centers. Staff are also available at the locations. The assistance available can help with job searches and more. Some or all of the following may able be available.
- Receive free job search assistance and direct placement when possible.
- The centers will have information on education and training programs in California, including those that are sponsored by the state or federal government.
- Each site will have resource centers with fax machines, computers, phone banks and career related publications. These will be free to use and access for members of the community.
- Financial counseling workshops can help the unemployed apply for government and/or financial assistance, including free child care and transportation.
- Meet with a specialist for employment counseling and/or referral to other types of employment assistance.
- Some locations offer Self-access to career planning tools such as software to help write resumes and informational videos.
California administers several different types of job training services. These can include, but are not limited to, occupational skills, counseling, educational, and more. Programs are created for the low income, long-term unemployed, disabled, and others. Special services are also available for Workers with Disabilities, Mature Workers, and Dislocated Workers. Counseling is also available for people that have been laid off from an industry that you are not likely to return to. The youth of California can also receive special assistance from the WorkSource Centers.
Adult Services are offered the WorkSource California Centers. This will generally mean anyone over the age of 21. Specifics of this include the following. Go through an intake process and attend orientation to get information on other services available. Clients will receive a free initial assessment of their skill levels and current abilities. Highly trained staff offer feedback on job search skills, placement assistance, and career counseling where appropriate. This also includes resume writing techniques and the development of enhanced interviewing skills. As you seek a job, also get hands on assistance with filing for federal government unemployment benefits.
Programs are available for unemployed and Dislocated Workers. This means people that have been laid off, downsized, or who were otherwise impacted by the weak economy. Residents will have access to Rapid Response teams, and they can even be advised on how to work from home for some money . Qualified clients will be provided support from a group of carefully selected professional Outplacement Service Providers who will try to get them to receive both short term assistance and longer term employment.
Self-Directed Services mean what a client can use themselves at a center. For example, individuals can access job listing, use of a computer, and phones. Boards will also be on site that provide information on local training and companies in California that may be hiring. Or access tutorial programs, such as computer-based instruction in skills such as typing or certain Microsoft software programs.
If after going through this process you are found to be qualified for job training, then this includes the following. Receive basic skills training, such as California GED preparation. Many workshops are available that provide classroom sessions from teachers and counselors. Some people are more interested in occupational skills training or on the job training, and that is an option too.
People with disabilities can receive assistance as well. The California Employment Development Department (EDD) works to provide job opportunities for people with disabilities, regardless of their age or personal situation. The department fully participates in the One-Stop Career Center system. This means that all clients with disabilities receive job opportunities equal to those of others. So they too can receive job search assistance, use of workshops, vocational counseling, referrals and more.
The WorkSource Centers also provide information on Unemployment Benefits. The government benefit can partially replace someones wages for a defined period of time while they search for a new job. Any type of payments will be made directly to the individual and money can be used to pay for basic needs such as rent, utilities, food, clothing, and more. This is a federal government created program that relies on additional funding from the state of California.
Senior citizens and Older Workers can access services too in order to make some money. More California employers, whether private or public entities, are seeking older workers for their experience and also their ongoing dedication to the workplace. Receive the best advice on completing a resume to showcase your experience. Also get information on local employers that may be hiring.
Job programs for Veterans are available from the EDD, or Employment Development Department. The state and federal government will give priority to and assist veterans and their spouses. The goal is to maximize their employment and job training opportunities. Representatives from a center provide a veteran 24-hour priority hold on all job listings, specialized job fairs, customized job search assistance for their unique skills, employer recruitment, and much more. This is a key service that can assist our dedicated military members with reentering the private, civilian workforce.
The various services available at each One Stop Center in California are offered in compliance with the Workforce Investment Act. So this includes a few key resources, as indicated below.
Clients will have access to the core WIA services from their local WorkSource Centers. There are several components to it. This includes counseling, free job search assistance, assessment, money making ideas and follow up. The next part of the process will include more case management, access to workshops, and follow up with staff members. The last step will be training programs for those who qualify.
Individuals in California who lost their job due to their employer outsourcing their position or maybe their job was eliminated due to foreign competition, they can benefit from the Trade Adjustment Assistance Act. This is a federal government supported WIA program. It can retrain those workers for new positions. Relocation, moving assistance, and more may be offered. Financial aid for paying living expenses may also be provided during the period in question as well.
Youth Services are offered from WIA. These are focused on people age 14 through 21. The state and government want to give them the tools necessary to make sound decisions regarding their future employment and career choices. California offers the youth occupational skills training, adult mentoring, guidance and counseling, Employment Opportunities, and leadership development. Younger workers may be placed into internships as well for much valuable experience.
Residents over the age of 55 can receive part time employment and training from the Senior Community Service Employment Program, or SCSEP as it is known in California. The state will work with seniors to help place them into unsubsidized employment in the private sector. An important part of SCSEP is to provide older workers with experience and get them re-acclimated into the workforce.
